From the very early years, in addition to dancing, ‘Victory Morris’ have gained a highly regarded reputation for singing. The ‘Side’ was formed in 1975 by Bob Boothe, (An ex-member of the Surrey based ‘Cup Hill Morris’) they subsequently became members of the ‘Morris Ring’ in 1980. With such a fine singing tradition, surprisingly this is their first recorded collection of songs. Divided between two CD’s, the material is sung in their usual robust style and draws from both traditional material and contemporary sources. Several of their members are talented composers and have written a number of quite exceptional songs, a few of which are represented on the two CD’s, including, VM001 - Heave the Lead: ‘Too Old to Go Back to Sea’ - Rod Smith, ‘Taro Fair’ - John Oke Bartlett, ‘If I Must Choose’ - Alan Glock and ‘Dancing with Men’ - Carrie Hogston. VM002 – Swing the Lead: ‘Winter it Has Gone’ - Rod Smith, ‘Rout of the Booze’ - Kerry Manning, ‘Haul Away to Hilo’ - John Oke Bartlett and ‘Just One More Drink’ - Alan Glock. These two CD’s are a fine representation of a fraction of their collective repertoire. However, whether you are looking to increase your personal CD collection with some popular and more unusual songs or alternatively searching for new material to sing yourself, ‘Heave the Lead’ and ‘Swing the lead’ come highly recommended.
