Northamptonshire's Gregg Cave releases his third album on May 8 2014.
Produced by Mark Stevens (Little Johnny England), this studio album is a blend of self-penned and traditional songs, all given Gregg's signature of extremely memorable tunes, distinctive guitar style and earthy vocals. The arrangements vary from the solo instrumental (Aida's lullaby) through duets with fiddle and melodeon (Last Day and We Need a Mother) to full electric band arrangements with drums, bass and fiddle on the remaining tracks.
With Gregg on guitars and harmonica, the core band consists of Nick Ellison on fiddle, Duncan Coverdale (Cousin Avi) on percussion and Brendan O'Neill (The Mobbs) on bass. Guest contributions include a scorching lead fiddle in "The Bonny Lass of Anglesey" from Dave Swarbrick (Fairport Convention and others),contributions from Mark Stevens and Gareth Turner (Little Johnny England) on guitar/percussion and melodeon respectively and Gregg's wife Jo on backing vocals.
While loosely fitting the folk-rock genre, the arrangements are organic with mellow acoustic guitar and fiddle melodies in the foreground wrapped around the vocals, but anchored on the precise rhythm section of his Gregg's indie band Cave.
The main theme of the album, as the title suggests, is the relationship with one's country and in this case, Gregg's home county Northamptonshire features strongly in songs like "The Bunny Run" and "Last Day". Gregg is performing his songs live around the country both as an acoustic duo or trio or electric band depending on the venue. Following recent appearances at Sidmouth, Ely and Cambridge folk festivals he will be appearing at Cromer Wimborne and Banbury festivals this summer and following a slight pause to become a father and record this album, is putting together a tour of folk clubs and other venues to promote the new album during 2014.
